GOOD GIRL GONE BAD

She increased her pace as she drew closer to the Bus Stop, time was not on her side. She had to hurry lest she arrived late- again!

Truth be told, she was getting a tad too tired of these walks from the house to the Bus Stop. She was tired of walking while he slept his mornings off tucked warmly in bed, car neatly parked in the driveway.

A truck pulled over quite abruptly and the Driver wound down his window. With a grin on his face and in a very masculine tone he asked; “Need a ride lady?”.  She had never seen this ‘kind’ stranger before and so she politely declined his offer and hurried along.

She boarded the bus just in time and was soon well on her way to work. And this, was her daily routine.

He often called her during her lunch hour to check on her whereabouts and more specifically to enquire, with whom she was spending her free hour?

She had somewhat become accustomed to the interrogative calls and often asked herself how and when he had become a member of the Federal Bureau of Investigation?

Many a lonely night she spent, harsh and demeaning words he hurled, a loose hand that often landed on her lovely face, inflicting bruises and at times forcing her bloodshot eyes closed. Oh and the shenanigans, HIS shenanigans!

She often wondered how her life would pan out without him.. One thing she knew for sure was that she had to get away from it all.

One late afternoon, her colleagues discussed embarking on a major Road Trip, out of the country. It sounded like a great idea and she was on board, without much persuasion.

The big day finally arrived! A convoy, cooler boxes, good food, great company, and they were off! She was excited. Moods were jovial and playful, she felt so alive! What a wonderful feeling it was…. away from the insecurities, away from all the infidelity, and away from the scolding.

It was not very long before they all arrived at their final destination, the City of Gold- Johannesburg!  A braai had been organized and her colleagues were fixing up the braai area while the ladies gathered together over a couple of drinks. Laughter, great chats, good music playing in the background, evoked an ambient atmosphere.  It was all good and well until he called her on her mobile phone, a conversation which went something like; “What took you so long to pick up your damn phone?” She apologized and explained that she did not hear the phone because of the music. He continued “… Who are those men talking in the background?” Before she could respond, he rudely added “Enjoy your (insert F word)” before hanging up on her.

A strange sense of calm engulfed her after the call which under normal circumstances; would have reduced her to tears and caused her pain. She took another sip of her drink and smiled to herself. Yes, she smiled. Yes, after he had insinuated that she was about to get it on with her male colleagues. She proceeded to mingle again with her colleagues and noticed a couple of unfamiliar faces in the vicinity.

A couple of lads attempted to make small talk with her but were nothing to write home about. It was the clean shaven, dark, well dressed and soft spoken gentleman that caught her attention. He was polite as he introduced himself …..
